The new Aloft Hotel is Anchorage’s newest boutique hotel, including 146 rooms and featuring a fitness center, lobby bar with live entertainment, an outdoor fire pit, an indoor swimming pool, and a full-service laundry facility. MCG served as the Architect of Record for this project. The 4-story facility was built in a 14-month period to open in Spring of 2022.
Part of the Marriott brand of hotels, the Aloft Hotel caters to tech-savvy tourists and offers voice-activated features and door locks controlled by mobile phones, along with the WXYZ Bar & Re-Mix Lounge. A 3,000-square-foot conference facility offers room for weddings and other events. Guest rooms are airy and modern with nine-foot ceilings, 55-inch flat screen TVs, and walk-in rainfall showers.
The project was originally slated to start in late winter 2020, the project was mobilizing just as the pandemic was being recognized across the world. The team coordinated with the developer to provide numerous options for construction and weighed the risks for each option. Ultimately the best decision was to furlough the project after pad development and site utility work was completed, but to continue to finalize the design and completed permitting process. This provided the developer with maximum flexibility to either restart the project or use the site for a different and future need. Ultimately, the project resumed in 2021. The total impact of the furlough to the developer was and additional costs were avoided through strategic planning and supply chain management.
